The Middle Ground Program

The Middle Ground Program focuses on strengthening families, while helping middle school parents and their children to find a Middle Ground. The goal of The Middle Ground Program is to help families resolve problems which may interfere with the student’s educational, social, or emotional progress.

The Middle Ground Program is available to any Hoover City Schools student in grades 6-8, and their parent(s), and focuses on helping students make positive life choices toward overall success. This early intervention family education program utilizes trained, master’s level counselors working with families toward improving their communication skills, decision making skills, peer and family relationships, while encouraging respect for self and others. The Middle Ground Program can guide you and your family towards accepting and implementing new healthy behaviors in a fun, interactive environment. We meet for six consecutive sessions with parents and their children for the first hour then divide the groups where the parents and children have the opportunity to meet separately for the next hour.

Session Topics Include:

    Effective communication • Family Values

Building Positive Character • Peer Pressure

Rules & Responsibilities • Goal Setting

    Resources & Community Support

Middle Ground is confidential program provided to HCS students at no charge to the family. Any inquiries and/or participation in the program will be kept confidential.

Comments from Our Participants

“This class has shown/helped me to communicate better.  I learned to watch what I say and to choose better words and to listen more.  I learned to explain myself so others don’t get confused!”   --parent of 7th grade girl

“This has been beneficial for us because it has shown my son that it is okay to talk to parents/teachers about things without worry of getting into trouble.  It has helped him open up and start talking not only about things that bother him, but also his ideas and experiences.”  --parent of 8th grade boy

“This Middle Ground Program helped me to learn to communicate better with others, get to know other families facing similar challenges and making new friends.  I liked it and hopes it comes around again.”  --7th grade boy
