About Us

Three years ago, The Hoover City School System established an early intervention program to support families of middle school students as they begin their transition through the tween and early teen years.  These students are faced with academic, as well as social and emotional, challenges while their parents are searching for a balance between release and support as their child’s world expands. The Middle Ground Program was designed to provide resources and build healthy coping skills for these families to successfully face the years to come.

“As a facilitator, I have enjoyed watching the growth of these families over their six weeks of time together.  It is truly amazing to watch the commitment that the families put into making positive changes in communication and investing more time together as a family.   Students are going through so many changes in Middle School.  They are amazed their parents can actually relate and often understand what they are experiencing.”

Jennifer McCombs, MSW, LCSW -- Jennifer holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work from The University of Alabama and is a licensed certified social worker.  She has been a therapist with Bradford Health Services, counselor at Big Oak Ranch, and in private practice with experience in mental health and substance abuse. Currently, Jennifer is the Student Assistance Counselor at Hoover High School where she counsels and provides academic support to students.

“I am amazed that Hoover City Schools offers this type of program to its students and families and think it is one of our best kept secrets.  I have watched families establish a fresh level of understanding with each other and overcome obstacles with the help of this program.  It is so fun to watch teenagers who don’t want to come to the program in the beginning, change their minds about the program after only a few sessions and actually enjoy being there with their family.”
