Welcome to the Hoover City Schools,

The 2006-07 school year marks the 19th year of operation for Hoover City Schools. In 1988, we began our school system with one high school, one middle school, and five elementary schools. Our student population was below 5000. Today, we anticipate enrolling more than 12,000 students who will benefit from our facilities that now include: two high schools, three middle schools, an alternative school, and ten elementary schools. Hoover has become the 3rd largest city school system in Alabama. Our annual operating budget exceeds $123 million.

Hoover City Schools was recently declared a “Super System for Quality Schools” by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, (SACS). Expansion Management Magazine named Hoover City Schools as a GOLD MEDAL school district which places the district in the top 16% of all school districts nationally.

Cameron McKinley, an elementary teacher at Riverchase Elementary School was named as the Alabama Teacher of the Year. Carol Barber, Principal of Simmons Middle School was named as the Middle Level Principal of the Year by the Alabama Association of Secondary Principals. Hoover City Schools currently holds the record for having more former State Teachers of the Year than any other Alabama school district.

The Class of 2006 earned a record $33.6 million in merit-based scholarship offers. Hoover graduated 749 seniors from the two high schools.

This summer, Hoover, Alabama was named by Money Magazine as “One of the Best Places to Live” in America and our own Hoover graduate; Taylor Hicks was named as the 2006 American Idol.

We have much to be proud of in our schools and community. As your Interim Superintendent of Education, I pledge to you that the Hoover City Schools will continue to offer a quality education to our students so they will be prepared to compete in the 21st Century.

Sincerely,
Andy Craig

Interim Superintendent
