FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q:  WHO IS APPROPRIATE FOR THE PROGRAM?

A: Any Hoover City Schools student, grades 6 – 12 who:

- has made poor peer choices

- is having communication challenges within the family

- has been impacted by substance abuse of a family member

- has demonstrated behaviors putting them at risk of harm

- has experimented with substances

- is making unhealthy choices

- is demonstrating a decline in grades, attendance, and behavior

- has difficulty managing stress, anxiety or anger

- wants to improve family relationships

 

At least one parent/guardian must attend the sessions with their child.  This is a program with emphasis on strengthening family relationships.

 

Q:  WHERE AND WHEN DOES THE PROGRAM TAKE PLACE?

A:  BRIDGES meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. during the regular school year at the Old Berry High/Middle School campus, 2826 Columbiana Road, Hoover, AL 35216 (map). The eight sessions are to be completed consecutively, which will allow a family to complete the program in four weeks.

Q:  HOW DO WE ENROLL IN THE PROGRAM ?

A:  You may talk with your child’s counselor, or the Student Assistance Counselor in our high schools to enroll in the program, or you may contact the BRIDGES Program Coordinator, Marion Kellough, at 439-1822, or the BRIDGES Secretary, Linda Lewis, at 439-1809.  

Q:  WHAT IS THE FORMAT OF THE PROGRAM?

A:  Each session is designed to allow families to encourage and support each other as they tackle difficult issues facing today’s teenagers and parents.  Providing an atmosphere that allows participants to learn to see issues from different perspectives, facilitators help educate teens and parents in a mutually respectful and confidential setting.
